DVDs, Events and Wedding preparations - Busy months ahead!

I'm very excited about the events and new projects that are coming up!

Khalida instructional DVDs

I am currently working on the 'call lists' or the scripts for both a 'Shimmies with Khalida' DVD as a DVD with 'Isis Wings combinations and technique'. Am super super excited about it all. Actual DVD recordings will happen in April in Montreal (in cooperation with Azizaraks productions!) and editing will be done April through June, so with a bit of luck the DVDs will be available by THIS SUMMER! Yay yay yay! :0)

Next to that new choreographies will have to be made, and I am testing the DVD material on my students (lots of shimmies! and playing with Isis wings) in the coming few weeks ;0) New photos are in the planning for the DVD cover as well, as soon as I have those I will be happy to share!

MK Festival

So far all the information we have about the MK Festival is already on the website (I've added the workshop descriptions, venue directions and hafla lineup recently) But the biggest news is: enrollments are NOW opened!

Bios and pictures of the dancers will be sent to Milka in the coming months, and I am waiting to receive some of the workshop descriptions at the moment. All the rest can already be found on www.mkfestival.com so feel free to browse, check and ask me (Khalida) if any extra information is needed!

In any case we are super pleased with our 2 international guests this year (Milka and I counted ourselves as 'insiders', haha): Razia and Sophia Chariarse. I've worked with Razia during our RAKS Summerschool for 3 years now, and the 2011 edition of RAKS has sold out completely in 23 hours and twenty minutes, unbelievable!

In any case she is a fantastic teacher and performer, you will see. And well, what else is there to say about Sophia than that we are super proud to have her in our lineup!! She is truly one of the best fusion performers in Germany, and very knowlegdeable in different styles.

Special guest performers at our hafla this year include Penthesilea, a gothic group from Germany, which have also been featured on Hagalla.de

We are also very happy to present Queenie, a fantastic dancer from Belgium (www.belly-dance.be ) and Harlemin from Holland, who won multiple prizes in the Dutch and Benelux championships. Also we will greet Artemisia, international performer who runs the RAKS summerschool with me and Razia in Belgium every year.

Other than that we will have RAKS PRO, an award winning (second place at Leylas Contest 2010!) professional troupe from Belgium www.rakspro.com who will be performing a drum solo choreo by guest teacher Razia. You will see a few of the guest dancers of last year featured in this group, and I am happy to say I've helped coach them for the competition as well.

Then we have Sylenna, who studies with me in Würselen as well as with Leyla in Duisburg. It will be one of her first solos, and she is a very promising dancer, one to be watched!

Amirah from Belgium (the Belgian half of duo Kokoro ;0) will be dancing a solo too, as well as Saida, a dancer from Belgiun who also owns the bellydance shop 'La Bellini', which was featured at the festival last year.

Another group performance will be by Ispahan from the Netherlands, and there will even be some live music this year, as Shemza and her partner Chris (aka Mr Boem-Taka-Boem) will be showing us their best with a live drum solo and live drum intermezzos during the break.

Festivals - events

But, before the DVD shoot begins, I will be visiting 6 different festivals in 5 different countires to teach and perform:
Yamilas festival in Heerlen 27, 28 Februari, with workshop on Saturday and show on Sunday
Workshops en show in Thessaloniki 5-6 March (yay :d )

Workshop weekend in London 11-12 March (almost sold out already, whoop!)

Euro RAKS Congress festival in Katowice 17-20 March

Jewel of Yorkshire festival in Saltaire, 1-3 April

Stars of Bellydance Festival in Brugge, BE 9-10 April

And last but not least: I will be getting married this year too! 27th of May is the date :0) Whoo! So a busy time is at hands.. But good busy of course ;0)

Pwew. And now I'm going to get some sleep ;0)

Talk to you soon!

Back from England! Celebrating Dance festival and video of 'Kemal'

Just got back from a FANTASTIC weekend teaching and performing at Afra Al Kahira's Celebrating Dance festival in Torquay. So happy and proud to have been dancing along such wonderful people like Yasmina of Cairo, Artemisia of Belgium, Vashti and many more..

The hafla/belly dance party was great fun and the show on Saturday was just amazing..I had a wonderful time teaching at CD as well, the delegates there were super enthousiastic and warm, and they worked it all weekend!

On Saturday morning we did shimmies, pops, locks AND undulations ;) plus traveling steps and transitions in the afternoon, and on Sunday we did the veil choreo called 'Kemal'. For the students looking for a youtube of that dance, check out this clip from my performance in Duisburg a while ago.

The composer of this song is Manis Hadjiakis, and the singer is Savina Yannatou. Translated Lyrics can be found here: http://lyricstranslate.com/en/Kemal-Kemal.html

And a fun (albeit freely translated ;) English cover by the band 'Raining Pleasure' here:

A few piccies of the weekend can be found in my Facebook album, the official show pictures will follow soon!

PS: I've already been asked to dance and teach at Celebrating Dance again in October 2011, yay! Lachen Looking forward to it a lot!!

xx K.

Back from Orlando!

orlando_flyer.jpgJust returned from an amazing weekend in Orlando with Aziza of Canada and Lena Helt of Sweden :) It was absolutely fantastic, I am still on my cloud, totally inspired :)

I originally heard about the event from Aziza herself at Leyla's festival in Duisburg, it was held at the Doubletree Resort in Orlando, organized by Andrea of Stellaradvantage during her birthday weekend, and thusly called 'Aziza's birthday bash'.

Aziza invites international teachers she loves to take classes from, and this year it was the fabulous Lena of Sweden.

Thursday - travel day

A failed attempt at packing light, a (very) early morning coffee in Düsseldorf airport, takeoff to Atlanta and Orlando. The meanwhile view = international clouds. I arrived just in time at the hotel to have a quick stroll in the beautiful gardens before the official 'meet and greet', where the festival teachers and international guests *waves at Nelleke and co* gathered to celebrate our birthday girl.

Friday - day one - workshops and show

A hearty hotel breakfast, just the thing to prepare for Aziza's drum solo craft workshop! It was fun and challenging at the same time, with the classic 20-minute shimmy drills plus a new spin on 'environment management' for dancers :) Lena's oriental workshop on Friday was FAST but also very musical, with a super cute melaya nod in between.

There were 2 shows at this event, one on Friday and one on Saturday. I was pretty nervous to perform there myself.. Aargh. With Aziza watching, my inspiration and dance hero. But I survived, somehow, happy there would be a second event. Did not get to catch the whole show sadly, but I did see some beautiful and incredibly innovative performances.. Karolina, Mia Sha'uri and her brother Al Hassan..  Those are definitely dancers to watch! Loved Leela's baladi, Sherena's fiery performance and the awesome Sheherazade girls. Lena did a super cute number in part 2 and Aziza was absolutely gorgeous in red.

Saturday - day two - workshops and gala show

Loved loved loved Lena's shaabi classes on Saturday, I feel I've learned so much and the choreos were a hoot. I enjoyed being able to hang out with her and Aziza for a whole weekend so much, truly great personalities and very generous people. It was a lot of fun to be able to meet some of Aziza's intensive students as well *waves at Lorena and co* and to see some great dancers from Bhuz *waves at Mahsati and others* 'live' for the first time at this event.

The gala show on Saturday night was on, and my preparations for this one were a bit more.. eventful. I had brought the mirror costume with me, and while unpacking I found one of the mirrors on the skirt was missing. Panic! I found it thankfuly after some rummaging in the costume bag, then had the luminous idea of trying to fix the skirt by ironing the glue to activate it again. And lo, it WORKED! I sat there feeling super smart for a few minutes, then had the even more luminous idea to start ironing my white veil.. with that same iron. Oops. The stain did not show much on the veil in movement thankfully, but the rest of preparations were done with a shaky hand and a careful eye..

The show on Saturday was even more spectacular than the one on Friday. I had never seen Aziza dance in her white costume before, and she simply took my breath away. Lorena was beautiful, Kaitlyn was awesome, the Swedish girls rocked, the whole show was simply top notch, everyone brought their best to the table. Lena closed the evening with the Shaabi number we learned in class, and boy did she bring it! Got the birthday girl up to dance and worked the tables, joked with the emcee and danced like there's no tomorrow. We didn't want the evening to end!

Alas, good things do still end in the end, so after some winding down with a late-night snack it was time for..

Sunday - day three - workshops, goodbyes and after party

Aziza taught an amazing class on improvisation techniques in the morning. I have taken this workshop before in Germany and Sweden, but every time I learn something new. The concepts she touches on are great for performers as well as teachers, and the information she shares is invaluable for students of all levels. She challenged us with assignments and joined us in the fray.. after the workshop there were emotional goodbyes, as she had to leave for the airport right away.

Lena's baladi class on Sunday was super sweet. She talked a bit about the music and styles, as well as her life in Egypt as a dancer, and we learned the choreo she performed on the first night.

The classes ended in the afternoon, which meant there was some time left for relaxing in the pool (finally! lol) and a memorable afterparty with the Swedish and Hawaiian girls at Greek taverna 'Opa!'

Monday - return

Flying back from the event was hard, too many good memories to leave them behind. I was picked up by Andrea and June in the morning for our trip to the airport. We quickly said our goodbyes, I took a last airport picture (with palm trees), shopped and had more coffee, then headed off home again. Feeling very grateful, with a head full of dance and a heart full of inspiration I'm sitting here writing.. Can't wait to dance some more soon and see my dance friends again!

The End!

PS: Check out the complete picture album here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=206460&l=1a8bd8...

Back from RAKS August Summerschool!

This blog post will be in Dutch, for now, I shall translate it later if I had more sleep.. maybe If you are curious then translate.google.com is your friend for now The short version: RAKS 2010 totally kicked ass!

Can't wait for RAKS 2011!!

RAKS Summerschool 2010 August

Yaaah!

Love you all! :-d (l) (l) (l)
